On Wednesday, April 18th, 2018, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries work together with Directorate General of Statistics in where this Directorate under portfolio of Ministry of Planning and Finance and also other line ministries as well as Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) will conducting census of agriculture within this year with an objective to know more detail the potential in agriculture sector in our country Timor-Leste. The meeting was held at the Directorate General of Statistics REHA conference room, Caicoli, Dili.
The General Executive Deputy for Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Mr. César José da Cruz by saying that the main objective for conducting census of agriculture is to increasingly the production of its agricultural and also its quality in order to minimizing the poverty. Through census of agriculture in a way to know more greatly data in our country as you all know that our country has a various sectors such as Agriculture, livestock, Forestry, Fisheries and so on.
Mr. Cruz also further said that due to this agriculture data therefore MAP work with Directorate General of Statistics from Ministry of Planning and Finance, FAO and also lines ministries have decided to implementing agriculture census within this year 2018 and at the moment they are on the preparation phase likes designing questionnaires so that while they go down to the field to conducting interview a community and an agriculture people so that the people will provide correct information concerning their land used and how many animals that they have and taking care, as you may know that currently we have the data but they are not one hundred percent therefore this census is really important to know about those area that mentioned in previously.
He also stating that through this census will bring to us a good data to be benefiting better our government, especially to technical people in agriculture in way to raise productivity in all sectors.
In the same occasion General Directorate of Statistics Mr. Elias dos Santos Ferreira who also currently as Executive President to Census of Agriculture stating that, we have conducted detailed discussion between Directorate General of Statistics and Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and also from technical horizontal have also been prepared all questionnaires and the referring questionnaire have finalized. There are two types of Questionnaires; one is will apply to households and other one for communities.
The Pilot of agriculture census has been done in three municipalities such as: Manatuto, Aileu and Liquica. In the pilot we have use these questionnaire to interview household and communities, but turn to the modern countries have utilize the CAPI or tablets therefore we have decided to use Computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) to using in the Census of agriculture. Mr. Ferreira furthermore said that as you may know that with the CAPI much easier to control the quality of data in the field and save much time.
DG Elias also underlined that in the census of agriculture we are not only conduct and interview to the households and communities but we also do the area measurement to the land of the households use for their own agriculture and farming. He further said that for measuring agriculture for them there is no problem but for farming there are difficulties that they encountered and as you may aware that some of the farming up there mountain and to be reach many kilometers to be reach there and we want or not should be go there to measure all farming in there. This is the obstacle that we face during us conducting pilot in the field. But for those entire obstacles for us to be tackle for future census.
The meeting was also attended by the General Executive Deputy for Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Mr. César José da Cruz, the General Directorate of Statistics Mr. Elias dos Santos Ferreira, Other lines ministries, representatives of Directors General, All Directors from Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Director General from State Finance, Mr. Januario da Gama, representatives from DGS and also from media.
