Timor-Leste First Census on Agriculture Launching an Opening Training for trainers that participate in Pilot test on December 2018/2019

Dili, October 22, 2018 – The President Census Technical Committee for Agriculture or General Director of Statistics Timor-Leste, Mr. Elias dos Santos Ferreira together with the General Directors from Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Mr. Claudino Ninas Nabais was officially launching an opening training to trainers for Timor-Leste first Census Agriculture that will be conducting pilot test for all an instruments and logistics that will utilize in the main census next year on March 2019.  This activity will obtain complete and accurate agricultural statistics as well as to obtain a clear picture of the structure of agriculture in Timor-Leste and getting a sample frame (sampling frame) that can be used as a sampling base for routine agricultural surveys. The training will be held in GDS training room for a week duration, in this moment aslo to advance technically knowledge for using questionnaire accurately that would be transferred to train others field staffs relatively. The opening was attending by  General Director of Statistics Mr. Elias dos Santos Ferreira, representative Minister of Agriculture, representatives from FAO, All National Directors at GDS and all staffs, the event took place at the GDS Conference room Caicoli Street opposite of RTTL broadcasting center.

Director Claudino was stating to collaborate with GDS to accomplish this census together, and the launching census pilot will be held on December 2018.  He is very grateful for the cooperation with representative FAO supporting by providing training to the supervisor, transfer and sharing knowledge to the trainers are considerably needed for data quality. He added that trainers must have knowledge about questionnaires until 80 %, so they can transfer to the field staffs to understand and dominate questionnaires. As a result, data quality for the Census Agriculture is not in doubt.

Representative FAO, Mr. Antony proud to be shared his knowledge and experience to trainers to advance developing Census of Agriculture, by providing training on how to utilize the CAPI (Computer Assisted Personal Interview). He advised to the trainers to take a brilliant opportunity by attending this training seriously. The Census of Agricultural results are used for planning, policy implementation, and evaluation of agricultural development programs in relevant ministries and institutions (Agriculture, Marine and Fisheries, Forestry, and Trade), universities and international and private institutions, he added.

The General Director of Statistics, Mr. Ferreira also explained that Census of Agriculture also was supported by politic decision makers. He advised to the related institutions to focus corporately bring this project into the best final.  Training for the trainers becomes the main barrier for the advance knowledge while using CAPI either. CAPI will be replacing of using manual questionnaires for efficient use. Mr. Ferreira advised for the trainers to be active during a week training, so please ensure to understand questionnaire better, mostly understanding to the main variables such as land area and type of irrigation. Mr. Ferreira would like to express his immense gratitude to the GDS and Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries teams and also very especially goes to representative FAO by supporting in provide various training, workshop, and fund to accomplish this project.
